Besides our 'main' educational project, Ghana Social Fund also works on social projects. This can range from contributing to or setting up projects in the domains of healthcare, sports, social empowerment, welfare, and the well-being of the Ghanaian people. Our goal is clear: human development, especially on the individual level, is always worth fighting for.

Helping Barak!
On our visit to Ghana in 2021, we were touched by the story of Barak. Barak is a smart and happy boy in the final years of his high school academy. However, he has lived his whole life with an untreated hard cleft palate (Dutch: "Schisis"), resulting in a speech impediment. 2 out of 2000 children are born with such an anomaly, but usually it is treated within 4 months after the baby is born. Unfortunately, Baraks' familiy did not have the financial needs for such treatment. As a result of his speech impediment, he was struggling to ‘speak-up’ in school and his private life, putting him behind and taking away the joy of life/school.

Clearly, when we heard this story it was time for action! Together with Barak and his mother we visited the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra, the prime health-care facility in Ghana. We arranged a medical treatment, including multiple operations over a time span of 3 months and various medicines.

But the story doesn't end there. At Ghana Social Fund we consider everyone we help as part of our family. Barak had been living with a cleft palate for his whole life, and had developed a speech impediment. Therefore we made sure Barak can go to a speech therapist to overcome this problem as well. As we speak Barak is following his lessons and becoming better everyday. We are thankful for our partners and donors who made this possible. As we are showing with Barak, it is possible to make real impact on a personal level: small for us but large for them!
